In 1989, David Thompson was able to get his hands on the coveted Estrella River Syrah cuttings that were snuck by suitcase into California from the famous Chapoutier Vineyard in Hermitage France. Without root stock, no grafting, Thompson stuck the vines into the bare sandy soil. The vines thrived! And today, this might be the only vineyard of own-rooted Syrah in Santa Barbara County.
